What is public health?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) “Public health refers to all organized measures (whether public or private) to prevent disease, promote health, and prolong life among the population as a whole. Its activities aim to provide conditions in which people can be healthy and focus on entire populations, not on individual patients or diseases. Thus, public health is concerned with the total system and not only the eradication of a particular disease.”

What does that mean exactly?  It means that public health concerns itself with the health of the population it is surrounded by.  Public health is on the front lines of creating policy and environmental changes that foster better health in the community.  That can be achieved through a variety of measures, from helping first time moms through Family Planning and the Nurse Family Partnership to fostering better nutritional health through hosting the Foothills Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays in the summer.

If it involves the health of this community you can believe that the Cleveland County Health Department is involved.
