The demolition of the Doran Mill will start on Oct. 13 and the cleanup of the mill site will continue through the end of the year.
The Doran Mill was built in 1921 and was one of three mills built by John Dover. When it closed in 2001, 350 people lost their jobs which increased Cleveland County's high unemployment rate to more than 12 percent while the national average was approximately 4 percent.
The Doran Mill holds memories for many families in Cleveland County, some of whom had three generations working at the Mill.
After the Mill closed and the property remained vacant, it fell into disrepair. The County acquired the property and hopes to develop it to its highest and best use.
